Duolingo – Know of it?

An article for Duolingo came across my Facebook feed a couple days of ago and I have to admit, I am incredibly intrigued!

Some of my friends already use it so I figured why not! And it’s free! Bonus!

The teaching style you’ll encounter in Duolingo is quick, upbeat, and forgiving. It rarely explains the grammatical logic behind a new concept. It just throws you into the pool and, when you can’t swim, scoops you up and throws you in again—until you find to your amazement that you can suddenly float on your own. Like Rosetta Stone, Duolingo associates photos with nouns to aid your memory. Unlike Mrs. Gonnerman’s 10th-grade AP class, it does not force you to conjugate verbs with rote recitations.

The article is a great read as well, going into some depth on the hows and whys the app is free. If you decide to try it out or already have it, I would love to hear your feedback!

BBB: Why you should worry if you see a charge of $9.84 on your bank, credit card statement

Heads up!  With the rash of data breaches as of late, this is something to keep in mind when reconciling your accounts every month! Article here.

OKLAHOMA CITY – While millions of customers are scrambling to get new debit and credit cards after a series of data breaches, officials with a national organization say there may be one simple charge that you should be looking for on your statements.

The Better Business Bureau is warning Americans about one charge, in particular, that may appear on your monthly statement.

Officials say scammers are charging stolen credit card numbers $9.84.

They say the scam artists believe customers won’t notice a small charge and credit card companies won’t go after such a small sum.

The charge usually goes back to a generic website for “Customer Support.”

The BBB says you should contact your bank immediately and ask for a new credit card.

A Rare Appearance of Layla

Layla usually runs from the camera. Unlike Vincent, she is *sure* the black device will catnap her and nothing will convince her otherwise.

So the fact that she was being all cute and actually stayed still when I broke the camera out was a wonder to behold!

She has got to be one of the prettiest cats. Too bad she is incredibly psycho. Way of the world, isn’t it? 😀

SCA Device Flag Project – Day 2

I now have my cartoon; it’s been traced and cut out into a stencil, now it’s time to get it on the canvas.

Since I used wax paper, I can just iron it onto the canvas without the worry of messing up the fabric. If you do this, you want to be sure you keep track of all your pieces, cause they will come in handy later!

Beginning Flag

The band around the bottom 2/3rds is my ‘border’ so there is a visual break for the shield.

Once the cartoon is ironed on, it’s time to paint!

I didn’t realize it until I took this photo that I actually grabbed the wrong type of paint. I wanted just plain latex but after I had a minor panic attack, I realized it’s working just as well so I am just going with it.

Note: If you decide to use acrylic paint instead, be sure to add a fixative so it doesn’t crack and peel off your fabric later.

Main Paint Charge

The first round of color is on and it’s looking great! Stay tuned for more project updates! 🙂

Love Actually and Hats

For some time now, I have wanted a slouchy hat. However, I couldn’t figure out *why* I wanted a slouchy hat. It’s  just been this overwhelming need to have one! Then yesterday, I realized it was a subliminal thing. Love Actually is the reason I want a slouchy hat!

Yeah, I know, it doesn’t make sense immediately. Let me explain.

Love Actually is a movie I watch ALOT. I know it so well, it can be playing while I am working and I don’t have to  actually watch it, I can see it in my head so I can keep working. Yesterday was the first time I watched it in some time cause Kress was watching it with me.Then I realized, at the end, at the arrivals gate at Heathrow, Natalie is wearing her awesome red coat and a white slouchy hat!

I have an awesome red wool coat so obviously, I must now have a white slouchy hat! It makes perfect sense! So a quick search on Ravelry has turned up this awesome pattern that is simple enough and yet has enough visual interest. I think it will fit the bill perfectly!

Now to find the perfect yarn!
